Describing MACC using Similes, Metaphors and Personification...

This term in English 6SL are looking at the concept of Setting and Atmosphere, in particular the Narrative Techniques used to create effective setting and atmosphere in others and our own stories. As part of this we have studied high quality examples such as the novel 'Playing Beatie Bow', the picture book 'My Place', and the film adaptation of 'Playing Beatie Bow'.

Last week we learned what a simile, a metaphor and personification was and found examples of each in the novel to add to our idea banks in our Writing books. This week we began using and modifying those ideas and examples to describe new settings, such as the illustrations in 'My Place'

Practice identifying and creating these language features assisted us to then write a description of a place in the school using these (without saying which place it was!) and have others guess where we'd described, as well as give feedback and identify what similes, metaphors and use of personification we had included! We then got into groups based on the place we'd described and worked collaboratively to compile all our best ideas and come up with a group description! See individual posts to read each groups description!!

The purpose of this task was to practice incorporating examples of high quality writing into our own writing repertoire, so that later in the term when we write our own imaginative texts we can create a highly engaging and creative setting. We will continue to practice and refine these skills as we move towards this task.
