Deforestation

Your PBL Driving Question is:

Is Deforestation really a problem?

Your task for the next few weeks is to present a report which gives your answer to this question.

Your report will be presented to the class in week 9. Its format will need to be negotiated. You may work by yourself, with a partner or collaborate with others but still present an individual report.

As you research, post some interesting facts or links you have discovered onto this page as a comment.

Plan:

Week 6:

Explore websites and note down interesting information and ideas that you might like to explore further.

Write your own research focus questions. (Remember to Ask the What? How? When? Where? Why? questions).

Explore things like Biodiversity, Extinction, Consequences, Impacts, Conservation, Management

Some websites to get you started:

Week 7:

Carry out your investigations. (remember to take notes and keep a record of sources for your bibliography)

Plan how you will present your report and what you will include to make it quality. (Remember to use the skills you have to make it a quality presentation. (neatly organised set-out and text, maps, graphs, diagrams, illustrations etc.)

Week 8:

Prepare your presentation.

Week 9:

Finishing touches and presentations.

  8. Hi people of the internet land
I have done some research on the rain forest the links are above here is what I found out. I found out that 14% of the worlds land used to be covered by forest now there is only 6% and we are losing more and more rainforest every second that makes me feel very sad but the research i'm doing may prove it ok in some instances.

  19. HI people of the internet land
I just found out something interesting (and worrying) about the Amazon.

Every 30 seconds . . we lose an area the size of two small football fields.
Every minute . . we lose an area 20 times the size of the Pentagon.
Every hour . . . we lose an area 64 times larger than the New Orleans Superdome.
Every day . . . we lose an area as big as all five boroughs of New York City.
Every week . . . we lose an area twice the size of Rhode Island.
Every month . . .we lose an area the size of Belize.
Every year . . . we lose an area more than twice the size of Florida.

  20. Hi 6sl
These are the facts I have learnt.

Rainforests once covered 14% of the earth's land surface; now they cover a tiny 6% and experts estimate that the last remaining rainforests could be removed in less than 40 years.
One and one-half acres of rainforest are lost every second.
Nearly half of the world's species of plants, animals and microorganisms will be destroyed or threatened over the next 25 years due to rainforest deforestation.
We are losing 137 plant, animal and insect species every single day due to rainforest deforestation. That adds up to 50,000 species a year.
As the rainforest species disappear, so do many cures for life-threatening diseases. Currently, 121 prescription drugs sold worldwide come from plant-derived sources.
Most rainforests are cleared by chainsaws, bulldozers and fires for its timber value and then are followed by farming and ranching operations.
The Amazon Rainforest covers over a billion acres. The Amazon covers, Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia and the Eastern Andean region of Ecuador and Peru.
The Amazon Rainforest has been described as the "Lungs of our Planet" because it recycles carbon dioxide into oxygen.
At least 3000 fruits are found in the rainforests; of these only 200 are now in use in the Western World. The Indians of the rainforest use over 2,000.
Deforestation is not good for the animals and plants that live there because a lot of medicines are made out of tropical Amazonian plants. There are also a lot of rare tropical endangered animals in the amazon, so if they cut down the trees they will have no habitat to live in.
