The Rocks Excursion

Last Friday stage 3 went to The Rocks. Stage 3 went to The Rocks because we were reading a book called Playing Beatie Bow. While we were there we discovered lots of beautiful sights that remained the same from the 1970's and the 1870's, for example The Garrison Church (where characters from Playing Beatie Bow got married), The Argyle Cut, and Susannah Place. We also walked up the stairs that Ruth Park described in Playing Beatie Bow.

We visited Observatory Hill and compared what we saw now to how The Rocks were described in the book. Going on this excursion helped some people visualise what The Rocks actually look like. The YHA Big Dig was very informative about what it looked like in 1873. While at The Big Dig Stage 3 got to see old pots, plates etc. from the 1870's.

The excursion helped Stage 3 come up with personification, for example: The walls were screaming for a coat of paint. Visiting The Rocks also helped Stage 3 come up with different writing strategies to write about the setting. This helped us by changing our first writing about The Rocks because after we went to The Rocks we did a second draft and improved our writing as it was more descriptive.
