CAFE strategy

One of our CAFE (reading) strategies this week is to 'Use a Dictionary'. While this may seem more like a writing strategy it is also an essential reading strategy.

When students come to a word they are unsure of, it can lead to comprehension issues if they cannot work out the meaning. A dictionary helps us know what a word means and thus make more sense of what we're reading. It will also help expand vocabulary as that word can now be used within their writing. An online dictionary is especially valuable in that students also have the option to listen to how the word is pronounced, thus improving fluency.

Here is Jess looking up the meaning of sappy, guru and snickering and then adding the definitions to her diary:

Nicole looked up meander and negotiating:

Both of them now have a much deeper understanding of their text!

What new words have you found the meaning of? Add them in a comment below, with their definition, to help create a class set of interesting words for our writing!
